There are many ways to reduce electricity expenses, including very big risks that are easily avoidable with proper advice and the ability to recommend any of the 10 electricity retailers active in the main W.A. market.
If you’re not aware of and taking advantage of the best options, it’s easy to pay very big unnecessary costs.
Energy Management Services is a West Australian business established in 1996. Initially we traded under the name of Expense Management Services, operating across a wide range of general overhead expenses, including telecommunications, insurance, stationery and printing. To reflect the fact that our major focus is now on reducing our clients’ energy expenses, we changed our name to “Energy Management Services”.
- Electricity Contracts – In 2005, when the market deregulated to the extent that businesses consuming at least 50,000 kWH (around $15,000 p.a.) of electricity p.a. were given a choice of retailers, EMS became the first to guide WA businesses through the process of reducing electricity costs by taking advantage of the new options. In the early days, just three retailers competed on price only. Now we have to assess over 40 points of comparison. Considering price and minimum consumption requirements only can be a very costly mistake.
- We’ve dealt with and continually studied the often quickly changing models of all 14 retailers that have participated in the main deregulated market. For more information, see – Electricity Contracts.
- Solar – In 2015, soon after three phase inverters made commercial solar viable, we added solar to our services. For more information, see – Solar.
- Other Energy Management – Depending on your consumption profile, capacity charges average around 20% of electricity expenses. Making small changes to when you consume and/or the addition of batteries, can result in capacity charges being reduced significantly or even eliminated. Other time shifting can also make a significant difference. We can provide our clients with the details of the time periods that are cheap v expensive to supply.

Key Points of Difference
- Allegiance – As consultants, our allegiance is to our clients and the suppliers who provide our clients with the best value (which might not represent cheapest price). An important part of our job is to advise our clients of any possible risks and downsides and how they can be managed and even eliminated.
- Agreements – Any agreement we may ask you to sign will be brief, in plain English. If you have any concerns, we are happy to consider modifying our agreement.
- Best Job Every Time – We don’t cut corners to maximise our hourly rate.
- Reports – Our reports are bespoke as distinct from a computer-generated standard one size fits all format. They are designed to provide a lot more quality information and distil sales, technical and legal speak into much briefer and easier to understand documents that allow our clients to make the best choice.
- Research – Asking the right questions of retailers and researching a wide range of independent sources gives us a big advantage in maximising our knowledge and establishing best value.
- Contractual Protection – The clear understandings we establish with retailers, combined with the ongoing support we provide our clients, results in much better protection than simply signing lengthy difficult to understand and compare legal documents that typically also refer to other documents not supplied and are subject to change at any time.
